i really don’t think that blacks go the movies seeking thought provoking material. the blacks actors making a living in hollywood are just punching the timeclock. citing the education factor, some but not many of “us” will sit down and read/enjoy a good book. keep giving them popcorn and soda pop drivel, for ignorance is bliss.

NO he should’nt !!!!!!!!……Cuz EVERYTHING he does always has the SAAAAAME OLLLLLD STORRRRY LIIIIINE !!!!!!!…..( NOT that this play was written by HIM )… But you know how he likes to add his own touch to stuff, and he’s just gonna “Perry” it up !… Next thing you know Madea will have a part in the play SOME KINDA WAY !…CUZ you know…..well…….never mind…Anyway, he’s a talented man, but he seams to be very limited to what he can produce, SO FAR.

he’s gonna do what he wants to do regardless of what anybody has to say about it. and its gonna make money just because of who he is. some are gonna get the point that he is making and others wont. i would like to see what it is just to see for myself then i can choose whether i like it or not.

I remember a pastor preaching the same sermon every sunday for weeks. After one time too many some of the church’s board members approached him and asked if there was a problem. he simply explained that his mission is not to entertain but to teach and uplift. He said how can I move on to the next lesson if the congregation hasn’t learned this one yet? While Tyler Perry does seek to entertain, I believe there’s something bigger behind his work than entertainment. I believe there are life lessons to be learned. When u do the work of the Lord, it’s best to follow his instructions, no questiones asked. I believe Tyler Perry answers to a higher boss, whom he will continue to allow to dictate his steps, not u or me or any whims we may have for variety in entertainment. Are we getting the message, in any case? Can he move on and teach something else or does he need to spend a little more time on that “same old story line”?

deh real Ragga seh, Jag, you are absolutely right!..Tyler is blessed and is guided by a higher power, much like President Obama. Never forget, that Jesus was persecuted, reviled and called all sorts of names by those that didn’t understand or realize who he truly was, and what his purpose was…Every so often there are people that are thrust in the spot light of the world, and when you look at their story, and where they have come from, to where they are now, it makes no sense as to why they are so successful, this is why they have countless critics and nay sayers, such is the case with Tyler Perry. My wife went to high school with him, and he and his family lived across the street from their home. Emmitt as she calls him suffered abuse from his father, and was always in trouble at school, and his family struggled, he was also homeless for a period in his life, but there was purpose in his struggle, which is what we see in his films. Gods was molding him for the life he lives now. If you never struggle and become completely broken, then you will have no testimony to share, and God will not get the glory!…God delights in our testimony, because when we tell others what he has done for us, then we are praising him, and giving him the glory!…Tyler will leave an incredible mark on this world through his films, just as our President will leave an equally incredible mark through his leadership. Just you wait and live long enough to see!

oh, one other thing!…… think about all the blockbuster movies that have had numerous sequels, but folks still flocked to see them, Rocky, Batman, Lethal Weapon, First Blood (Rambo), Terminator, Harry Potter,Home Alone, Lord of the Rings and the list goes on, these movies will vary slightly from one sequel to the next, but the theme is fairly close in those as well, I don’t see all the critics complaining about those films that seem to never know when enough is enough, but hey, as long as we go to the Box Office, and spend our money why should they!….let Tyler do his thing, cause as we all know, when any man of color becomes too successful in this country’s eyes, there will be countless detractors working to bring him back down, with or without our help…. believe that!

I agree with Breezy, his story lines are the same, and you always know how it will end. As for teaching the message of seeking the lord that is great, but it is also over the top to believe that all stories and situations that he writes about always have a happy ending, because they don’t. The girl does not always meet prince charming and everything is not always hapy ever after. I also personally prefer his plays. I enjoy them so much more than the movies, it seems like he always waters his plays down for the big screen. I guess that is what you have to do to attract a wider audience, oh well I guess we’ll see what happeneds.

BECAUSE OF THE ‘OLD BOY NETWORK’ THAT EXISTS IN THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY (as well as every other major industry in this country) THE TYLER PERRYS OF THE WORLD (both Black and White) ARE SEVERELY LIMITED IN WHAT MATERIAL WILL ACTUALLY REACH AUDIENCE. A COMPROMISE MUST BE MADE BETWEEN WHAT IS ‘COMMERCIALLY’ ACCEPTABLE AND WHAT SERVES A LOFTIER PURPOSE. I DON’T BELIEVE THAT TYLER OR ANY OTHER WRITER/PRODUCER/ACTOR, HAS COMPLETE LATITUDE AND/OR AUTONOMY TO PRESENT “REFLECTIVE ART”. THAT BEING SAID….WHILE WE WAIT FOR THAT LONG-ANTICIPATED ‘AWAKENING’ LET TYLER TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN……AFTER ALL, AT THE END OF THE DAY, HIS FIRST RESPONSIBILITY IS TO HIMSELF !

and his work is always the same. i applaud, but i refuse to watch his movies… not even the stage plays even the house of payne is just boring and meet the browns meh saw it once didnt amaze me

I supported Tyler’s early work, legally purchasing all his plays. I actually prefer his stage plays: I find them to be engaging and thought provoking. I find the movies to be overly commercialized versions of his prior works. The commercialization is exponentially present in the television shows that bear his brand. I do not watch them. I suggest a substantial rest will be good for Tyler’s creativity. I expect so much more than he’s recently provided.

In the beginning, I thought everything he did was amazing. After many years, I found myself asking my husband “didn’t we just see this”? At that point I realized I had overdosed on Tyler. I enjoyed the Payne’s for a while, but could never get into The Browns. He has talent, I won’t deny that. And I’m sure whatever he does is going to make him a lot of money. It just won’t be MY money, I’m taking a much needed Tyler Perry Madea House of Payne Meet the Browns break.

Daddy is right!….unless Tyler owns the entire shooting match he will have to play the game. I enjoyed the plays more as well, but I also know what he’s up against!…Tyler will have the last laugh though, you’ll see….I would also throw this out as food for thought, tell me of one entertainer, producer, director or artist of color that you know of that has not compromised to reach the pinnacle of success in their industry!….look at our President, even he is having to compromise to get things done, and they still refuse to give him his props, but when you have an anointing, man cannot stop your progress. Those two black men will rewrite history, mark my words….Tyler is just beginning, there’s much more to come!

i think Tyler Perry is a find actor/Producer his story lines are very well put together it teaches a lesson to women well as men on how a relationship have been damaged. Everyone have struggled with something in life, and learns from there mistakes. Take me for example i’ve struggled through alot of terrible relationships but i’ve learned from them i’ve moved on. I’ve come to a point in my life that i’ve written about 210 poems hopeing to one day get them published my poems are based on my past relationships as well as Gospel POEMS, Love poems etc. All i’m trying to say is i wish that people would stop critizing others and learn from there mistakes. I really do think that the world would be a much better place if we stick together. I applaud Tyler Perry for all of his plays/movies it’s a learning experiance. God Bless.

I’m going to be honest. I’m not a fan of his works… but then I’m a fan of much of what I find in the media. Tyler Perry needs to be a little more diverse in the situations and people he tackles when sits down and writes.

I personally am not a fan of Tyler Perry’s work. His success; however, cannot be denied. Granted his plays are better then his movies because the movies lack originality and depth(in my opinion), but he has mastered the art of grabbing the attention of his target audience. I just wish that he would step out of his comfort zone (meaning no Madea or anything relative) and show the movie industry that he can be just as creative as any other movie producer.

I wouldn’t pay my money to see anything Tyler Perry does, personally. Its all the same bullshit. A black grandmomma “poppin’ caps,” ready to fight, and all other black stereotypes? I can’t even say if the first time I saw it was funny, but it damned sure worn out its welcome by now. Is that kind of shit all we’re good for? I’m not even saying it has to be all intellectual and educational but GEE WIZZZ! This bullshit is so played! Like someone said, as long as he keeps getting paid because people want to see it he’ll keep doing it and I don’t blame him. But personally I’ll pass.

I understand what everyone is saying. First we have to remember how far along black folks have come in hollywood. I hope and pray that Mr. Perry is first in a long line of African American filmakers to get our stories on film. We have so many to tell that we all must stay concentrated on going forward. No matter who is in the films we must be thankful that many of his characters are positive and most of the time reflect how we as blacks sometimes live. I think movies and plays for black folks will get better because they dam sure can’t get worse than what we went through in the past.

I don’t know, but I would think we’d have been in a place by now, where the buffoonery, shuckin’ and jivin’, step and fetchit type of entertainment would have been over by now.

Sure, we went through negatives in the past. In fact, there were times when we were relegated to certain types of performances and contributions. So, it’s easy to see why detractors of not just Mr. Perry, but other notable blacks in fim making feel they’re “selling out,” by still going with the status quo.

In Tyler Perry’s case, it shouldn’t be missed that he’s put out some thought provoking, informative and educational offerings. But characters like the gun-packing, ghetto-ized grandma and others still seem to cling to the old “black folks should stay in a certain box” mentality we’ve long decried. Thisvtime, though, it’s self-imposed.

I see it like this: there are not many black men that make uplifting movies with morals. alot of those movies like mo betta blues and boyz in da hood are damn near non existent. tyler perry gives ppl of all races – espeically black people – hope, and that all you have to do is keep praying. He send out a positive message. fuck a controversy. if it teaches, then let it be. like the old saying goes, if it dont apply, let that shit fly son. most of the most controversial things in life is the truth and it may hurt, but alot of ppl will wake up out of their suga coated topping world they live in. i aint christian, but i support tyler perry because he is a positive black man, he does not degrade women, to love yourself and be family orentated, he encourages ppl to be themselves and to keep your faith, oh yeah and he sexy as hell too. hell i would love me a tyler perry. the things i would do to that man….sheesh…rotf.

I can respect many of the opinions to the contrary, and yes we have made some strides, but there’s still a serious fight to be won. The battle has just changed venues, but it’s still there!…the days of open oppression has given way to boardroom and corporate maneuvering….don’t forget how long it took for Halle and Denzel to achieve the ultimate success in the industry….It will probably be twice as long for a director/producer of color to even get nominated. When people can openly carry guns at an event where the Commander-in-Chief is speaking, disrespect the President openly, and make threats without repercussion, then is when you realize, we still have quite a ways to go…and now that he has won the Nobel Peace Prize, it will get much worse…Tyler can only go as far as the industry will let him right now!…that’s what boils down to. He has to fight tooth and nail to keep Lionsgate from having creative influence in each film, and they were nobody before Tyler. It’s not as easy as it seems, if he loses control, he will lose it all!
