In high school I once attended a young businesspersons conference. One of the workshops I attended was titled “Multicultural Marketing” I thought it was about marketing to other countries, but when I got there I was mistaken. It was hosted by a marketing consultant who worked with PepsiCo, and he spoke of the tactics they used to attract black and hispanic consumers.
One thing he spent a good amount of the hour on was how a study showed that “black people like the color red in their beverages” and that was the major factor behind the Code Red Mountain Dew flavor.
Every time I see a black person walking down the street or in a restaurant drinking a red beverage, especially Code Red MD or Hawaiian Punch (PepsiCo products) I laugh to myself because of how sad it is that they are profiting from a ludicrous stereotype.
